Melvin Tate Obituary

Melvin Tate Sr., (77), departed from this life February 5, 2025 in Middletown, DE in his daughter's care. He was the husband of Barbara Kelley-Tate. They shared over 50 years of marriage together.


Melvin was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Rev. Robert Tate Sr. and Ada Hicklen Tate. Mr. Mel as he was known by many, came to Philadelphia in 1958.


He then met his wife, Barbara Kelley and they resided in Lansdowne, Pa. He graduated from Overbrook High School. He held occupations such as a Baker, Truck Driver, and a Foreman. His most loved job was a Foreman at the Pennsylvania Convention Center where he was employed for over 30 years.


Mr. Mel was a kindhearted, mellow, strong, and giving man. He was very quiet but everything about him was loud. He loved his Budweiser and his Cadillacs.


He acquired many hobbies during his lifetime. As a young man, in his spare time, Melvin played baseball. Also he enjoyed bowling, fishing, shuffle board, scratch offs, and dancing specifically the Bop. He also enjoyed cooking possums, chitterlings, coon, and rabbit. He will be remembered for his fashion sense and his love for his family. He often took trips back down South to visit family.


Melvin was preceded by his son, Melvin Tate Jr.; siblings, Robert Jr. Dorothy Bryson , Annie Bryant, and Helen Tate.


Celebrating his life and continuing his legacy are his wife Barbara Kelley-Tate. One sister Betty Petty of Philadelphia, Pa. His daughter Tamika Kelley- Wilson of Middletown, De. and son in law Rodney Wilson Jr Daughter in law Tasha Tate Raleigh, Nc of the late Melvin Tate Jr. 4 grandkids, Melvin Tate Jr. Raleigh Nc, Don Williams, Philadelphia, Pa, Zafirah Lane, Middletown, De, and Ishmiel Lane, Middletown, De. Also a host of loving Nieces & Nephews, cousins and friends.
