Dorothy Louise Sargent was born in the Women's Hospital at Preston and Parrish Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Robert Booker Sargent and the late Hazel Roberts Sargent on July 20, 1937. "Bucky" as she was affectionately called by family and childhood friends was the oldest of their two children. Dorothy was educated her first six years at Morton McMichael Elementary School in the Philadelphia Public School System. In the year 1949 she was baptized at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, she finished her education at St. Ignatius grade school then West Catholic Girls High School.
Dorothy gave birth to a daughter, Denise and a son, Anthony who were the pride and joy of her life. Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized on July 1, 1984 at Sweet Union Baptist Church, 1536 N. 59th Street, by the late Pastor James A. Smith. On the first Sunday of May 1987 she began her membership at the Millennium Baptist Church, 1639 N. 52nd Street under the Pastorship of the late Rev. David L. Waller, Sr. The Lord blessed and used Dorothy to teach Sunday School, be a prayer warrior, and encourager to many by the sending of get well, birthday and sympathy cards. Dorothy also enjoyed calling and visiting the
sick to have prayer, sing hymns and just talk with them to show they were in her thoughts. Dorothy always remembered the kindness of her family, church family, friends, the West Oak Lane Church of God church family and neighbors, when she was fighting her battle with cancer and she wanted to give back. On November 29, 2005 Dorothy moved her membership to Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church under Pastor James Moore, Sr. whom she respected and loved.
Dorothy also loved her Church Family and was happy and blessed in her fellowship with Second Mt. Zion. Dorothy was employed by the Yellow Cab Company as a telephone operator for a brief period. In October 1966 she gained employment with the City of Philadelphia as a School Crossing Guard, a position she held proudly for 26 years until her retirement in September 1992.
Dorothy did volunteer work for the American Red Cross Blood Bank until her health crisis in November 1998. God kept Dorothy through it all! She was also a member of the Golden Age Club of retired city workers. A loving and devoted mother she leaves to cherish memories: two children, a daughter, Denise Michele Sargent, a son, Anthony Wayne Sargent; three nephews; one niece; 2 devoted cousins, Ms. Christina Waddell, Mrs. Lynda Jeter; her Kansas City, Missouri family, Mrs. Davessa Howard Johnson, Mrs. Cheryl Howard Jones(Gilbert), and Ms. Glenda Howard; other relatives and friends.
