Alice Loraine Shannon Obituary

Alice L. Shannon

June 23, 1936 – June 21, 2025

Alice Loraine Shannon was born on June 23, 1936, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of Mary E. Griffin-Fowler and had two sisters, Colleen Harrison and Ollie May Joyner, both of whom preceded her in death. In the early 1940s, her mother relocated the family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in hopes of providing a better life and educational opportunities.

Alice was raised in South Philadelphia before eventually settling in West Philadelphia on Haverford Avenue. She graduated from Overbrook High School in June 1954. Although she initially planned to become a business teacher, life led her down a different yet fulfilling path.

Alice began her professional journey as a clerk for the Philadelphia Police Department, where she worked for approximately five years. She later transferred to City Hall and joined the Department of Records Index. Through her hard work, professionalism, and dedication, Alice rose to become the Supervisor of the entire department—a position she held with pride for 35 years until her retirement in October 1991. She also worked seasonally for the United States Postal Service.

Alice was first married to Earl K. Jackson, with whom she had a son, Michael D. Jackson. Following their divorce, Alice was fortunate to discover love again. She met the man who would become her life partner and soulmate, Detective Frank Shannon Jr. Their bond was immediate and deep, blossoming into a marriage rooted in joy, strength, and unwavering devotion. The two were united in love in January 1979 and remained inseparable for more than 44 beautiful years, until Frank's passing on August 22, 2023. Their union was a shining example of commitment, laughter, and the kind of love that stands the test of time.

Alice was a woman of deep faith and a proud Baptist. She regularly attended and supported several churches throughout her life. Her radiant spirit came alive when she danced, traveled, or spent cherished moments with loved ones. Her warmth, grace, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her devoted son, Michael Jackson; her daughter-in-law, Janet Jackson; her treasured granddaughter, Dr. Milanj E. Jackson; and her beloved stepdaughter, Ms. Deidra E. Shannon, Esq. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Alice deeply valued the connections she built and nurtured throughout her life. She held especially close relationships with the Mack, Shannon, Perry, Harrison, Burney, Thomas, Joyner, and Griffin families. If your name is not listed, please know that your place in her heart was never forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, and her loving husband, Frank Shannon Jr. Alice's legacy of faith, compassion, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be profoundly missed, but her light and memory will forever shine.
