Betty Jo Rodgers
September 25, 1938 – July 11, 2025
On a blessed Sunday, September 25, 1938, a light was born into this world—Betty Jo Rodgers, the only child of Joseph and Flossie Mae Smith. From her very first breath, she was the apple of their eyes, their pride and joy, their promise for the future. On July 11, 2025, after 86 remarkable years, Betty Jo was called home to be with the Lord, reunited with her parents and eldest daughter.
Betty Jo was educated in the School District of Philadelphia and pursued higher education, earning a scholarship to a prestigious university of the arts in New York City. Yet, life's melody led her heart to Kenneth Rodgers, with whom she built a beautiful family. From their union, three children were born: Cynthia, Darryl, and Kim—the living legacies of their love.
From a young age, Betty Jo gave her life to Christ, deeply rooted in faith. Her parents were two of the twenty-two founding members of Phillipian Baptist Church under the guidance of the late Reverend Amos Brackeen. Betty Jo remained steadfast in her faith, worshiping with Deliverance Evangelistic Church under the late Reverend Benjamin Smith, and later praising through dance at Triumph Baptist Church. Her devotion to God was visible in every aspect of her life, from her worship to her service to others.
A woman of immeasurable talent, Betty Jo was a true renaissance woman—a fashionista, artist, milliner, and visionary. She founded the business Beautiful Things, a perfect reflection of her life's philosophy. She was a trailblazer in the Philadelphia fashion scene, curating dynamic fashion shows for community organizations across the city. Her shows were more than just runway events—they were vibrant theatrical experiences, celebrating beauty in all forms. Betty Jo boldly included women and men of every shape and size, always weaving in skits and performances that left audiences inspired and entertained. Her artistic talents extended to music; she played the piano with grace, sang with a soul-stirring voice, and even tapped-danced, gracing annual recitals under the direction of renowned local dance schools.
Family was the heartbeat of Betty Jo's life. She was a devoted daughter, caring for her parents—who shared 72 blessed years of marriage—until their peaceful passing, her father in 2009 and her mother in 2011. Her love was limitless, her care unwavering.
Betty Jo was also a pioneer and civic leader, making history as the first and only known Black American president of the Northern Liberties Association. In a time and place where representation was scarce, Betty Jo stood boldly, breaking barriers and opening doors for generations to come. Her leadership left an indelible mark on her community, embodying grace, strength, and determination.
She was the embodiment of class, culture, and courage. A world traveler, Betty Jo embraced life's beauty on every shore, carrying her elegance and wisdom wherever she went. Her light radiated in every room, her presence unforgettable, her impact immeasurable.
Betty Jo leaves behind her husband Roosevelt Morris, her son Darryl Rodgers, and her cherished daughter Kim Rodgers, along with the precious memories of her late daughter Cynthia Walthour. She is celebrated and remembered by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, cousins, dear friends, and countless young women who were forever touched by her kindness, mentorship, and example.
To know Betty Jo was to witness a life of purpose, passion, and profound faith. She was a trailblazer, a matriarch, a woman of style and substance, and above all, a servant of God. Her legacy will continue to uplift, empower, and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
