Helen Beatrice Churchill Morris, affectionately called "Bea," was the youngest daughter of 14 children born to Helen and Clarence Churchill on July 12,1931 in Downings, Virginia. She transitioned from advanced illness to her heavenly reward on July 9, 2025, with phenomenal strength and peace.
Bea was raised in a Christian home and was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Downings, VA with her family. Her early childhood was spent in Richmond County, VA where she received her elementary and high school education. She graduated from Richmond County High School in 1948 and graduated from Virginia Union University, Richmond VA in 1953, majoring in education and achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree and Virginia State Board Teachers Certificate. Bea taught elementary education after graduation.
On December 27, 1953, Bea and the late Carroll Patrick Morris, Jr. united in marriage and soon thereafter they moved from Virginia to Philadelphia. Four children were born from that union.
Bea had a special interest in caring for the elderly and those in need. In the late 1950s, she acquired a caseworker position with the Commonwealth of PA Department of Public Assistance (DPA) in Philadelphia. She was employed as a DPA caseworker for more than 25 remarkable years until her retirement in 1982. Early in her retirement she developed a niche consigning second-hand clothing and household items. She also followed her passion for floral design while employed at Overhill Flowers in West Philadelphia and served in the flower club ministry at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where she was a church member for over 40 years.
Bea's faith in God sustained her throughout life. Helping others and providing a listening ear were among her greatest gifts. She was a protective 'mama bear' about her children and grandchildren. She gave encouraging support and modeled courage and determination to reach goals. She enjoyed music, traveling and entertaining at home. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she loved decorating at Christmastime. Her favorite interests were gardening, playing pinochle, and baseball – particularly the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bea was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory: Four children, Patrice "Pat" Morris, Carolette Morris Holmes, Carroll Morris III, and Valerie Morris; a brother Ralph Churchill (Julia), sister-in-law Mary ("Lil") Churchill; five grandchildren, Joy Wilson, Micah Wilson, Nicholas Wilson (Anastasia), Gordon "LG" Gunn and Gary Gunn; nine great-grandchildren, Hyleem Blakemore-Wilson, Lyric Wilson-Nelson, Naomi Wilson, Adeline Wilson, Elioenai Wilson, Hezikiah Wilson, Gary Gunn Jr., Ella Gunn, Ayla Perrin, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, bonus children, and friends.
