The Quick Guide to Choosing a Cemetery Property

Creating a burial plan for yourself or a loved one requires careful thought and decision making.

As you embark on selecting a cemetery, it is a good idea to go into the process armed with as much knowledge as possible. Below are some helpful tips for choosing a cemetery property, including considerations regarding cemetery type, costs, and location.

Types of Cemeteries

The traditional cemetery is not your only option. Many types exist, each with its own ambiance, rules, and requirements. They include:

●      Green cemeteries

●      Memorial parks

●      Religious cemeteries

●      Veterans’ cemeteries

The type of cemetery you choose will depend on several factors, including the availability of burial plots, religious considerations, ground maintenance and fees, as well as the deceased’s military background. Some cemeteries only allow grave markers or have restrictions on the type of headstone that can be used. Landscaping style and perpetual care costs and requirements are additional considerations. If a traditional cemetery isn’t for you, you might be interested in a memorial park, which provides a more natural atmosphere that’s evocative of an outdoor sanctuary. A green cemetery might be a good fit if environmental considerations are a factor. Consider the personal needs of your loved one and your family as you make this decision.

Budget and Pricing

While funeral homes and cemeteries work together, each adheres to separate rules and regulations. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires funeral homes but not cemeteries to provide you with a price list upfront. Therefore, there may be some “hidden costs” of a cemetery burial of which you are not aware of going into the planning process. Be prepared to advocate for yourself and ask lots of questions. Remember that you do have options and a quality cemetery company will gladly work to address your concerns.

If you are opting for earth burial, you will need to consider the cost of a grave liner. The liner is a structure that sits in the ground and serves to protect the coffin. Additionally, you will need to pay for opening and closing the gravesite. The opening and closing need to be staffed to ensure that the burial process goes smoothly. The ultimate cost will vary depending on how intricate the ceremony will be, such as whether you want to be present as the casket is lowered into the ground. If cost is a consideration, purchasing burial plots in advance can help you to save money as it avoids potential future price increases.

Location and Convenience

Where cemetery plots are located and their accessibility are important considerations. The location of the cemetery might be determined by the individual’s current residence, where they grew up, a place they loved to visit, or one that is closer to visiting or buried family members. Another consideration is how easy it is to get to the cemetery and visit the gravesite. Hills and remote locations may make it challenging for the grieving to pay their respects. Also, if having a specific location for burial plots is important to you, check the availability and the cemetery’s policy on specific burial sites. In some cases, the exact location will be based on what is available at the time of the burial.
