This Healthy Aging Month, discover how simple lifestyle changes can unlock the door to a more fulfilling life as you age.

September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to promote ways for people to stay active and vibrant as they grow older. Many factors can influence healthy aging. While some of these factors, such as genetics, are not within our control, research shows there are many steps we can take to improve our health and well-being in our later years. Even small lifestyle changes help us live longer and better.

Read on to discover eight smart ways to take charge of your well-being during Healthy Aging Month and beyond.

1.     Get moving.

Maintaining regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight and lower blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, such as walking, jogging, or swimming. Choose activities you enjoy so you’ll be more likely to make them part of your daily routine. And be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

2.     Follow a healthy diet.

Overeating can lead to obesity and increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Limit or avoid processed foods, which are often high in fat, sugar, and sodium. Stay hydrated, too. Adults should drink between eight and twelve cups of water per day, depending upon the temperature and your activity level.

3.     Quit smoking.

Smoking damages blood vessels and significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. If you smoke, seek support to quit. Many resources are available, including counseling, medications, and support groups.

4.     Keep stress in check.

Prolonged stress can elevate blood pressure, increase inflammation, and contribute to heart disease. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies.

5.     Get adequate rest.

During sleep, the body’s cells are replenished with essential nutrients. Lack of sleep can lead to elevated blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions over time. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to support overall health.

6.     Keep your mind active.

Try engaging in puzzles, reading, or learning a new skill. Regularly challenging yourself with activities like crossword puzzles or brain games can boost cognitive function. Exploring new hobbies like playing a musical instrument or taking up a new language can help maintain mental sharpness and overall well-being.

7.     Stay social.

Loneliness and isolation are the enemies of longevity, so make an effort to keep your social network strong. Engaging in clubs and groups is a fantastic way to meet new people and build connections. Whether it's a book club, gardening group, or a local hobby class, participating in activities of interest fosters friendships and keeps you socially active. Technology can bridge the gap between you and loved ones who are far away. Use video calls, social media, and messaging apps to maintain regular contact with family and friends.

8.     Visit your doctor regularly.

Get regular checkups, physicals and medical tests when needed as many diseases can be prevented when caught early. Don’t forget to make appointments with the dentist and ophthalmologist, too. Be sure to take all medications as prescribed.

Embrace Healthy Aging Month as an opportunity to celebrate life’s possibilities and invest in a future where vitality flourishes. By caring for your health now, you can help make sure your older years are more active, independent and fun.
