Seasonal Fall Prevention: Top 10 Tips for a Healthier, Happier Autumn

As cooler weather sets in, it’s a good time to make seasonal fall prevention part of your autumn routine.

Crisp air and colorful leaves make autumn a favorite season for many. But it can also bring new safety challenges. As we get older, the risk of falling increases. In fact, falls are the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older.

The good news is that many fall-related injuries can be avoided with a few simple precautions. Minor changes around the home and in your daily habits can greatly reduce your risk. Here are ten practical seasonal fall prevention tips to help you stay safe and confident this autumn.

1.     Keep outdoor walkways clear.

Autumn leaves may look beautiful, but they can be surprisingly slippery, especially when they’re wet. Try to keep porches, steps, and sidewalks free of leaves, twigs, and other debris. If you notice icy patches on chilly mornings, sprinkle sand or kitty litter to add traction and make walking safer.

2.     Stay active to keep balance strong.

Regular movement helps maintain strength and stability. Gentle activities like walking, tai chi, or chair yoga can improve balance and coordination while boosting confidence. Staying active also helps you feel more comfortable moving around your home and community.

3.     Wear shoes with good traction.

Supportive shoes can make a big difference. Look for styles with firm soles and non-slip tread, and avoid smooth-soled shoes, high heels, or loose slippers that could cause you to slip. Comfortable, sturdy footwear provides stability whether you are indoors or outside.

4.     Add more lighting.

Shorter autumn days mean less natural light, which can make it harder to spot obstacles. Check that outdoor lights are working, especially around entryways, steps, and walkways. Inside your home, add night lights to hallways, stairwells, and bathrooms to reduce the chance of tripping.

5.     Remove tripping hazards.

Loose rugs and clutter can be easy to overlook. Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing or tape. Tidy up electrical cords and pet toys to keep walkways clear. Small adjustments like these can make your home much safer.

6.     Install grab bars and handrails.

A few well-placed supports can make daily routines more secure. Adding grab bars near toilets, showers, and bathtubs can help with balance. Make sure stairways have sturdy handrails on both sides.

7.     Get a home safety check.

Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can catch things you might not notice. A friend, family member, or even a physical therapist can walk through your home to look for risk factors. They may spot uneven flooring, poor lighting, or cluttered spaces that are easy to fix.

8.     Keep up with vision and hearing checkups.

Clear vision and good hearing help you notice changes in your surroundings. Schedule regular eye exams and hearing tests so you can make any needed adjustments. Something as simple as a new glasses prescription can help you stay steady and avoid mishaps.

9.     Review medications for side effects.

Some medications can cause dizziness or drowsiness, which may increase your risk of falling. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines. Sometimes, small changes in timing or dosage can make a big difference.

10.  Move with care.

Rushing often leads to missteps. Give yourself time, especially when using stairs or stepping outside on damp days. Use a cane or walker if it has been recommended, and do not hesitate to ask for a hand if you feel unsteady.

Preventing falls is one of the best ways to preserve your independence and well-being. A few simple adjustments can reduce your risk so you can keep doing the things you love.
