Marshall Douglas Smith was born on March 21, 1944 in Rowland, North Carolina to Orum Smith and Lilian Foxworth Smith. He was the 2nd of five children born to his parents. Marshall grew up in Rowland and completed his High School education receiving his diploma at South Side High School in Rowland, North Carolina. He also received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from the Community College of Philadelphia. He met Orenthia Cauthen in Philadelphia and they married on September 30, 1967. He had a praying Mother In Lillian Foxworth Smith and he found a church home at Mount Airy Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA and remained a faithful member until his passing. Marshall was a loving, no nonsense, and dedicated employee and trusted friend, husband, and father of his two sons. He always welcomed everyone into his home from family, neighbors, friends of his children, and others. He got his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Community College of Philadelphia and worked as a correctional officer in the Philadelphia Prisons. He faithfully served nearly 31 years to the City of Philadelphia, retiring with the rank of Sargeant from 1970-2000. Marshall enjoyed watching basketball, football and watching and playing baseball. He loved rooting for his favorite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and enjoyed coaching youth baseball teams with his super star son Lamar. He was extremely proud of the championship that the team won under his leadership. He enjoyed going out with friends, and after a satisfying dinner. eating fruitcake, macaroni and pound cake. Nothing brought more pride and joy in her life than being with his wife and enjoying holidays and special occasions with family. As a grandparent, he delighted in spoiling his grandchildren Maya, Aaron and Carrington with his time and any candy, ice cream, cookies, or other treats that they may want. You would often hear her telling them, "Pop Pop will get you whatever you want." On Sunday January 21, 2024, Marshall transitioned home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Orenthia Smith and is survived by son Marlowe Smith; daughter-in- law, Andrea Lynette Mooring Smith; grandchildren Maya Noelle Smith and Aaron Josiah Smith of Delran NJ; son Lamar Smith of Philadelphia and granddaughter Carrington Kameryn Trinity Smith; Marshall is also survived by his sister Vivian Elaine Love (nee Smith), brother Michael O. Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other beloved family members, and friends.
