Bernard John Hughes Obituary

Bernard was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 30, 1938, the first son of the late Bernard John Hawthorne and the late Mary E. C. Hughes.

Bernie, as he was affectionately known by family, friends, and coworkers, was educated in the Philadelphia school system. He left high school to join the Marine Corps, where he completed his education. Bernie had a deep love for the Marines, so much so that he would practice drill routines on his younger siblings, cousins, or anyone he caught misbehaving, making them stand at attention in the corners. He would also spend hours spit-shining his shoes until he could see his reflection. The Marines instilled in him pride, strength, and energy. It was not uncommon to see him supporting his body weight on a pole with just his arms, doing 100 push-ups, sometimes on just four fingers, two on each hand, or racing buses up the street and winning. This remarkable strength and agility served him well in his senior years.

Bernie was dedicated to everything he set his mind to and prided himself on his skills and determination to tackle any challenge. After serving four years in the Marines, Bernie received an honorable discharge and went on to work for the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and eventually retired from the Veteran Administration.

On July 25, 1993, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ginger Smith, in holy matrimony. Bernie was known for his sense of humor and always kept those around him laughing. His family adored him and cherished the memories they created together.

Bernie leaves behind his loving wife, Ginger; five children: Roland, Ginger (spouse Derrick), Kenneth (spouse Yvonne), Ronald (spouse Tamika), and Aston (spouse Monique); 34 grandchildren, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Yvonne (spouse Wallace) and Theresa; two brothers, Stanley and Morris (spouse Brenda); one half-brother, Mike (spouse Debbie); one brother-in-law, Robin (spouse Rose); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven, four sisters, and three brothers.

Bernie's life was a testament to his faith, hope, and unwavering commitment to his family and country. As Bernie would often remind us, "Semper Fi—Always Faithful."
