Doretta Elizabeth McLeod was born to Paul Sr. and Dorothy McLeod (nee) Evans on April 30, 1934 in Kinston, North Carolina. She spent some of her formative years with her maternal grandmother, Virginia (Ginna Mom) Evans in Camden, New Jersey. She was soon reunited with her family and siblings Paul Jr. and Alma.Doretta graduated from Atkins High School in Kinston, North Carolina. Following high school, she attended North Carolina A&T University for two years.During this time she met her husband Reid Oakley and they wed on February 27, 1957. Their son, Vincent "Tony" was born prematurely on August 30, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
They resided on Marvine Street in North Philadelphia. Doretta then sought professional employment at Bayuk Cigars as a clerk typist. After working there for a period of time she decided to seek employment with Hahnemann Hospital of Philadelphia. While working at the hospital she interviewed for a position in the Purchasing Department. This hire led her to be the first AfricanAmerican to hold the position in the hospital's history. Her duties included serving as liaison between salesmen from medical equipment companies and the hospital. Later she began employment with the Department of Public Welfare, Philadelphia County Assistance Office and worked in positions of Receptionist, Clerk Typist and Income Maintenance Worker. She received many accolades from local, state and federal officials. Doretta leaves behind her loving husband,Reid, son, Vincent (Tony), sister, Alma McLeod and sister-in-law Peg McLeod. In addition nephews, Paul Jr., Dante MCleod and other nieces, nephews and friends. Also last, but not least, her three favorite cut buddies, Lucretia, Donna and Jerome.
